Hungary and the United States have signed an agreement on cooperation in the field of nuclear energy. This was announced by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

Szijjarto signed the document together with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The Hungarian Foreign Minister called the signing an “important milestone in Hungarian-American relations.” The agreement provides for the start of negotiations on cooperation in the field of civil nuclear industry, in particular in the field of small modular reactors (SMRs) and spent fuel storage.

“The United States and Hungary are working together to make Budapest the center of a new SMR market in Central Europe, using leading American innovations in nuclear energy to launch a new transatlantic industry”, – the press release states.

Hungary plans to facilitate the construction of up to ten small modular reactors with a total potential cost of about $20 billion.

At the same time, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced during a meeting with US President Donald Trump signing of an agreement with the American company Westinghouse for the supply of nuclear fuel for the Hungarian nuclear power plant “Paks I”.
