If Putin is not arrested in Brazil, it will open the way for other criminal leaders: Kostin

Ukraine received information about the possible visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit, which will be held in Brazil in November this year. Prosecutor General of Ukraine Andriy Kostin in an interview with Reuters stated, that in the event of Putin’s arrival, the Brazilian authorities must fulfill their international obligations and arrest him.

“We know that Putin may visit the G20 summit in Brazil. I would like to emphasize once again that the Brazilian authorities, as a state party to the Rome Statute, are obliged to arrest Putin if he dares to come there.”, – said the official.

According to the publication, Brazilian officials and representatives of the Kremlin claim that the final decision on Putin’s visit has not yet been made. In turn, the spokesman of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Fadi el-Abdallah, emphasized that all member states of the Rome Statute are obliged to comply with the court’s decision.

Kostin expressed hope that Brazil will confirm its status as a democratic and legal state, acting in accordance with its international obligations. If Putin is not arrested, he said, it could set a dangerous precedent where leaders accused of crimes can travel the world with impunity.

The Prosecutor General also stressed that the international community must unite to hold Putin accountable for his actions.
