Important changes in the requirements for child car seats in Europe: what Ukrainian drivers need to know

Every year, the safety of children during car trips becomes more and more important. As car accidents continue to be one of the main causes of child injuries, the countries of the European Union are constantly updating the requirements for safety equipment for minor passengers. Important changes regarding the use of child car seats came into effect in September 2024. Ukrainian drivers who plan to travel to EU countries or are already in the territory of the European Union should familiarize themselves with the new rules in order to avoid fines and ensure the maximum safety of their children.
New safety standards for children’s car seats
From now on, in the European Union, all child car seats must comply with the new R129/i-Size standard, which was adopted back in 2013, but until now had no general application. One of the main changes was the introduction of a mandatory criterion for choosing a car seat based on the child’s height, and not by weight, as it was before. The maximum height of a child in which a car seat is used is 150 cm.
This new standard provides for mandatory marking of car seats with a special sticker R129/i-Size, which must be placed in a prominent place. Car seats without this marking or with permits obtained outside the EU are considered unsuitable for use on the territory of the European Union.
Transition from old standards
Previously, there were two car seat standards in the EU – ECE R44/04 and ECE R44/03. These standards were based on weighted criteria, but over time it became clear that this approach has significant drawbacks. For example, a child may have the appropriate weight for a certain type of seat, but outgrow it due to height, which led to the incorrect location of the seat belts and reduced the level of protection. In the new system, height has become a defining indicator, which allows better consideration of the child’s anatomical features.
Car seats that met the previous standards are no longer usable or sold. This applies to all seats that have ECE R44/04 and ECE R44/03 approvals. Fines for non-compliance with the new rules can reach 200 euros, making the issue of safety not only vital, but also economically significant.
What changes for drivers
The introduction of the new R129/i-Size standard aims to provide better protection for children when travelling. Among the key innovations is an improved seat fastening system, which provides reliable protection of the child’s neck and head, which significantly reduces the risk of injury during accidents. According to the results of studies, the use of a child car seat reduces the risk of injuries by 90%, and the probability of fatalities by 75%.
It is especially important to note that new car seats must be compatible with the ISOFIX system, which allows you to avoid errors during their installation. This system also provides better stabilization of the chair during movement and increases the overall level of safety.
For Ukrainian drivers who travel to the countries of the European Union, or live there on a permanent basis, these changes are mandatory. Ignoring the new requirements can lead not only to fines, but also to serious consequences in the event of accidents. Therefore, it is important to take care of the availability of a car seat marked R129/i-Size in advance, if a child up to 150 cm tall is transported in your car.
Additional information and advice
Drivers should remember that the new standard covers not only the requirements for car seats themselves, but also general safety rules. For example, children under the age of 15 months should be transported with their backs facing the direction of travel, which provides better neck protection during possible collisions.
In addition, experts recommend regularly checking the compliance of the car seat with new standards, especially if it was purchased several years ago. Remember that even minor damage can reduce the level of safety of the car seat.
Thus, the new rules for the transportation of children in car seats in the territory of the European Union are designed to make traveling safer. Drivers from Ukraine should take these changes into account and ensure that their car seat complies with the new standards in advance, in order not only to avoid fines, but also to ensure maximum protection for their children.
