The Saeima of Latvia approved amendments to the law on support for Ukrainian refugees
Ukrainian refugees who have found refuge in Latvia face new challenges, but also receive additional support. The Latvian state continues to show solidarity by introducing new aid mechanisms and adapting existing programs. In this article, we will consider key changes in social support, legal status, and opportunities available to Ukrainians in this country.
Changes in social assistance
The Latvian Seimas adopted significant decisions in support of Ukrainians who found refuge in the country. As reported Delphi, The Sejm Committee on Defense, Internal Affairs and Anti-Corruption has approved changes to the law on assistance to Ukrainian refugees.
The total amount of expenses planned for next year is 65 million euros, and the Ministry of Social Security of Latvia guarantees reimbursement of expenses to local municipalities for the payment of aid to Ukrainian refugees.
Special attention is paid to the expansion of one-time financial assistance, which will include:
- for adults: €377 (increase from €343);
- for children: €264 (up from €240).
This increase will allow refugees to better cope with immediate needs and adapt to new living conditions.
In addition, support includes compensation for living expenses, food for vulnerable categories of the population, as well as payment for medical drugs.
Changes in legal status
Latvia has decided to extend the validity period of the residence permit (residence permit) for Ukrainians. Previously, the document was issued for two years, but now its term has been extended to three years. This is aimed at simplifying administrative procedures for both refugees and the Citizenship and Migration Office.
Additionally, expired Ukrainian travel documents will remain valid until February 28, 2026. This is an important step to ensure the mobility and legal protection of refugees.
Social guarantees for children
Special attention is paid to refugee children. Children aged 7 and over will be entitled to a social security certificate, which provides access to various types of support. This assistance will continue until the child reaches 19 years of age.
New requirements for medical workers
Ukrainian doctors and pharmacists working in Latvia are also facing changes. Starting in 2024, after three years of work, they will have to confirm knowledge of the Latvian language at the B1 level. This requirement will affect 142 medical workers who arrived in the country in 2022. Despite this, the opportunity to work remains open, and the adaptation process is accompanied by support.
Latvia not only continues to support Ukrainian refugees, but also improves assistance mechanisms, providing more opportunities for integration and self-realization. The introduced changes in social guarantees, extension of legal status and creation of conditions for employment are evidence of sincere solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
It is important for Ukrainians living in Latvia to follow updates so as not to miss new opportunities. To do this, it is recommended to subscribe to official sources of information and contact local authorities in case of questions.
