In Lviv, the issue of powering traffic lights during a power outage was resolved

The Lviv city government is actively working on providing traffic lights with backup power. By the end of the year, 90% of traffic lights at city intersections will be equipped with autonomous power sources, which will allow them to work for up to 10 hours in the event of a power outage. About this reported in the city hall of Lviv.

As Oleg Zabarylo, director of the department of urban mobility and street infrastructure of the Lviv City Council, noted during the briefing, autonomous provision of traffic lights will become possible thanks to the installation of uninterruptible power supply units. Such units are equipped with an inverter, a battery, as well as ventilation and heating systems, which guarantees stable operation of the equipment in any weather conditions.

“We power traffic lights in various ways, but mainly they are uninterruptible power supply units. Such a unit contains an inverter, a battery that enables the traffic light to work without interruption. There is also a ventilation and heating system so that the traffic light can function in different weather conditions.”Oleg Zabarylo clarified.

It is expected that by the end of the year, autonomous power will be connected to about 150 traffic light objects out of a total of 170, which are on the balance sheet of the Lvivavtodor utility company. In general, these objects cover more than 2,000 traffic lights. Such a step will make it possible to significantly increase road safety even in conditions of emergency situations with electricity supply.
