Iran accuses Ukraine of supporting Syrian rebels
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran accused Ukraine of supporting the Syrian rebel coalition and called on it to stop, as they say, “cooperation with terrorist groups in the West Asian region.” A corresponding statement did Mojtaba Demircilu, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran.
According to him, Iran received information that Ukraine is allegedly supplying the Syrian rebels with weapons that it itself received as part of military aid from the United States. The Iranian diplomat called such actions a violation of international obligations in the field of combating terrorism and said that they should be stopped immediately. Demirchilu also accused Ukraine of “unethical policy” to destabilize the West Asian region by supporting such groups.
At the same time, he stated that Iran allegedly consistently opposed the war in Ukraine, did not take part in the conflict, and called for diplomatic ways to resolve it. However, such statements contradict Tehran’s actual actions. Iran has been supplying Russia with Shahed-type attack drones for a long time, and also helped establish their production directly on the territory of the Russian Federation.
Due to Iran’s military cooperation with Russia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine revoked the accreditation of the Iranian ambassador to Ukraine in September 2022 and reduced the number of diplomatic staff at the embassy in Kyiv. At the same time, the issue of severing diplomatic relations with Tehran was discussed, but no such step was reached.
