Iran signed a large-scale agreement with the Russian Federation on the construction of a new nuclear power plant for $25 billion

The Iranian company Iran Hormoz has signed a large-scale agreement with Russia’s Rosatom for $25 billion to build a new nuclear power plant in the city of Sirik in southern Iran. About this reported agency IRNA.

According to the agreement, Rosatom will act as the general contractor and provide a full cycle of work – from design to the commissioning of the station, as well as provide the necessary technologies and equipment.

The new NPP will have four power units with a total capacity of almost 5,000 MW, and a plot of about 500 hectares has been allocated for its construction. The project is part of Iran’s 20-year strategic program for the development of atomic energy.

Chairman of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Mohammad Islami, emphasized that cooperation with Russia in the nuclear field is of strategic importance and will contribute to the introduction of new technologies, including small modular reactors. He added that the world is actively moving in this direction, and Iran has sufficient industrial potential to implement such projects.

Let us remind you that Russia is already implementing one large nuclear project in Iran – Bushehr NPP. The first power unit with a capacity of 1,000 MW was handed over to an Iranian customer in 2013, and the construction of the second phase began in 2016. Work on the second power unit was planned to be completed in 2024, on the third – in 2026.
