Iran sends its military to Syria to help Assad
Hundreds of Iraqi fighters supported by Iran crossed the border with Syria on the night of December 2 to help the regime of Bashar al-Assad in the fight against the rebels who have captured the city of Aleppo. About this informs Reuters.
According to sources in the Iraqi security forces, about 300 militants, mainly from the Badr and Nujabaa groups, left for Syria late Sunday night. To avoid an official border crossing, they used a dirt road.
“These are fresh reinforcements on their way to help our comrades on the front lines in the north”, — said a representative of the Syrian army.
He also noted that the militants were transported in small groups to avoid airstrikes.
For a long time, Iran’s support through regional groups played a key role in suppressing the rebels who have been fighting President Bashar al-Assad since 2011. These groups have their bases on the territory of Syria and closely cooperate with pro-government forces.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arakchi said that the Syrian army has sufficient potential to counter the rebels. At the same time, he emphasized that regional groups supported by Tehran will provide additional assistance, and Iran is ready to provide any necessary support to Damascus.
