The second day of remembrance and reconciliation – these days are marked by the decision of the UN General Assembly on May 8 and 9. They are dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Second World War.

Europe Day – is celebrated to celebrate peace and unity on the European continent. Previously, it was celebrated on May 5, the day of the founding of the Council of Europe. Then the celebration was moved to May 9 – the commemoration of the Schuman Declaration of 1950, in which for the first time it was proposed to form a single political and economic European community. On this day, the European Coal and Steel Association was established,

1567 – born Claudio Monteverdi, Italian composer, one of the founders of the opera genre.

1837 — the birthday of Adam Opel, the founder of Adam Opel GmbH.

1871 — born Volodymyr Hnatiuk, Ukrainian folklorist, ethnographer, literary critic, publisher, academician of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences

1913 — the first flight of Igor Sikorskyi’s S-10 “Hydro” seaplane.

1913 — the film “Fantomas” was released on French screens.

1919 — Simon Petliura was elected as the head of the UNR Directory.

1920 — the Ukrainian society “Prosvita” was founded in Uzhgorod.

1945 — in the USSR: the official victory of the USSR and its allies over Nazi Germany. At the CA named after Frunze landed Li-2 with the crew of A. Semenkov, who delivered the act of surrender of Nazi Germany to Moscow.

1972 — Israeli special forces Sayeret Matkal carried out operation “Isotope” – the first successful release of an airplane with passengers on board, captured by terrorists.

The plane was seized by Palestinian terrorists from the organization “Black September”. The special forces were headed by the future prime minister of Israel, Ehud Barak. Within 90 seconds, the special unit in three groups of 16 people seized the plane, neutralizing the grenades and explosive devices of the terrorists. During the assault, two female terrorists were captured, two more terrorists were killed. Three passengers were injured during the shootout (one of the injuries was fatal).

2014 — a group of terrorists (about 60 people), armed with automatic weapons, attacked the city police department of Mariupol. On the occasion of the day off, there were practically no employees in the building – only two shifts on duty, about 14 people. The battle began. Soldiers of the National Guard and two units of soldiers from the “Azov” battalion came to free the policemen. As a result, the policemen blocked on the 3rd floor were released.
