EU and the world

Kaia Kallas commented on reports about the EU’s preparations for negotiations with Putin

On May 8, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas commented on a Financial Times report that the European Union was allegedly preparing for talks with Putin regarding the war in Ukraine.

In Chisinau, answering journalists’ questions, Kallas stated that the current peace talks were actually not yielding results. According to her, in this negotiation direction, all the demands are made to Ukraine, while there are no such demands to Russia.

She emphasized that before any talks with the Russians, the EU countries must first agree among themselves what exactly they want to talk about.

“And that is why a few months ago I proposed to the foreign ministers a list of things that we also want to see from the Russian side. After all, there are also requests to Europe, if, for example, we mention the lifting of sanctions,” Kallas emphasized.

According to her, the EU foreign ministers will discuss this issue at the end of May.

“As for Moldova, I believe that the withdrawal of Russian troops from Transnistria should also be one of the EU’s demands,” Kallas added.

The Financial Times reported that EU leaders are preparing for possible talks with Putin as European capitals grow increasingly frustrated with US President Donald Trump’s talks to end the war in Ukraine.

Earlier, Kallas said that European countries should not beg Russia for talks to end the war, but should put it in a position to make Moscow engage in real dialogue.
