King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden arrived in Lviv on an official visit

King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, on April 17, arrived in Lviv on an official visit. This is the first trip by a Swedish monarch to the Ukrainian state since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. The head of state is accompanied on the trip by Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard.

The main purpose of the visit is to familiarize himself with the experience of the functioning of social infrastructure under martial law, in particular the work of educational institutions and medical institutions in the city.

Carl XVI Gustaf held an official meeting, which was attended by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. The leaders jointly visited the Champ de Mars, where a solemn ceremony of laying flowers at the graves of fallen servicemen representing the Armed Forces of Ukraine took place. This gesture became a symbol of the Swedish side’s deep respect for the struggle of the Ukrainian people for their independence and territorial integrity.

“We arrived in Lviv to see with our own eyes the resilience of Ukrainians and to discuss further support for schools and hospitals operating in extremely difficult conditions,” – the Swedish Foreign Minister noted in a comment for the foreign media SVT.

In addition to the humanitarian component, the visit takes place against the backdrop of a significant increase in military-technical assistance from Stockholm. In particular, it recently became known that Sweden has decided to transfer modern Tridon Mk2 anti-aircraft defense systems for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Official Stockholm also confirmed its readiness to join the international Agreement on the Establishment of a Special Tribunal to investigate crimes committed by Russia on the territory of Ukraine.

“Sweden remains steadfast in its solidarity with Ukraine and supports initiatives to bring those responsible for war crimes to justice,” the Swedish Foreign Minister added.

The Swedish delegation’s trip to Lviv is part of a broader European support strategy aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities and restoring the civilian sector. The interaction at the level of the Swedish royal family and the government emphasizes the strategic nature of the partnership between the states.

The results of the visit are expected to contribute to attracting additional investments in the reconstruction of hospitals and educational spaces damaged by the consequences of hostilities. Stockholm continues to demonstrate leadership in security issues in the Baltic region and throughout Europe, directly helping Ukraine to confront the challenges of modern warfare.
