“Kyivstar” launches testing of Starlink’s Direct to Cell technology
The largest Ukrainian mobile operator “Kyivstar” announced about the launch of testing of the new Direct to Cell technology from Starlink for its subscribers. At the first stage of testing, users will be able to receive and send SMS messages, and anyone can participate in the testing.
Testing will last from October to November 2025. After the successful completion of the tests, the operator plans to fully implement the technology in the 4th quarter of 2025. This will allow the use of satellite communication to transmit messages even in remote areas where there is no coverage of terrestrial base stations. In the future, “Kyivstar” intends to add the possibility of mobile Internet and voice communication via VoLTE, which will significantly expand the functionality of the service.
The operator emphasizes that during the test period the use of Direct to Cell technology does not require additional payment. At the moment, the technology is only available on Android smartphones, as “Kyivstar” awaiting official confirmation from Apple to support iOS devices.
Direct to Cell is an innovative Starlink technology that connects a smartphone directly to satellites. They function as base stations for mobile communication in space, allowing you to stay connected even in areas where the signal of ground equipment does not reach. Thanks to this, users get reliable communication in remote areas, mountains, at sea or in emergency situations when traditional networks are unavailable.
The introduction of Direct to Cell opens up new perspectives for Ukrainian subscribers, making mobile communication more sustainable, technologically advanced and available anywhere in the country.
