Language inspectors in Ivano-Frankivsk: the commissioner reacted to the mayor’s words

Ukraine has never had and is not planning to introduce language inspectors. Such a statement was made by the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, Taras Kremin, on the air of the “Kyiv” TV channel, responding to the comment of the Mayor of Ivano-Frankivsk, Ruslan Martsinkiv, who hinted at the possible appearance of language inspectors in the city to counter the use of the Russian language.

Marcinkiv’s statement appeared after a meeting with Kremen, where they discussed the need to introduce a language program in the city. However, Kremin emphasized that the idea of language inspectors is nothing more than a fiction of Russian propaganda, which has been actively using such semantic distortions since the adoption of the language law in 2019.

According to the commissioner, no “language inspectors” will be introduced in Ukraine, and the responsibility for such public statements lies with local authorities. During the meeting with the mayor of Ivano-Frankivsk, they agreed on the importance of fighting bilingualism in the city and the need to implement a language program.

Kremin also emphasized the importance of inspections by the city authorities regarding the observance of language legislation, especially in educational institutions, health care, transport and the service sector. The language program in Ivano-Frankivsk must be approved by October 27.

Earlier, Ruslan Marcinkiv announced the possibility of introducing language inspectors in the city due to the increase in the number of people who communicate in Russian. The mayor did not reveal the details of this plan, noting that the details will be announced later.
