Language Ombudsman promotes initiative for official status of Ukrainian in EU

Taras Kremin, Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, took the initiative to give the Ukrainian language official status in the European Union (EU). He told about this in interview “Apostrophe” publication.

According to the language ombudsman, this step is part of the strategy of “offensive Ukrainization”, which includes not only the protection of the Ukrainian language within the country, but also the desire for its recognition at the international level, in particular as an official language of the European community.

Kremin emphasized the need to create a special organizational committee, which will include representatives of the Cabinet of Ministers, the Verkhovna Rada, and language institutions. Their task will be to develop the necessary language policy for the recognition of the Ukrainian language at the EU level.

The Ombudsman also emphasized that Ukraine, having become a member of the European Union, may face the risk of not including the Ukrainian language in the list of official languages of the European Union. Therefore, an important aspect is ensuring the translation of EU regulatory documents into Ukrainian and the languages of the EU countries.

“This is a school of translators under the Council of the European Community. This is, of course, the active work of our diplomatic offices in all European countries, which must ensure a vote for this important norm.”, – noted Taras Kremin.
