UN Security Council lifts sanctions against Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa
The UN Security Council has approved a resolution proposed by the United States to lift sanctions against the interim President of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, and the Minister of Interior, Anas Khattab. This was reported by the UN press service.
“Adopting resolution 2799 (2025) by 14 votes to 1, the and 1 abstention (China), the 15-member Council decided to remove Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa and interim Interior Minister Anas Khattab from the list of individuals, groups, undertakings and entities subject to sanctions, the statement said.
The decision concerns restrictions imposed against representatives of the “Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant” (ISIL) and “Al-Qaeda”. As emphasized, this step is aimed at removing obstacles to Syria’s economic recovery.
US Permanent Representative to the UN Mike Walz described the resolution as a “strong political signal” recognizing Syria’s transition to a new era:
“The removal from the sanctions lists adopted today will help give the Syrian people the best chance for a stable future and prosperity”.
Syrian UN delegate Ibrahim Abdulmalik Olabi, who was present at the meeting, welcomed the adopted decision. According to him, the text of the resolution corresponds to a “historic and courageous decision” US President Donald Trump to support Syria.
“We see this resolution as a sign of growing confidence in the new Syria, its people and its leadership. Syria is turning the page of war and suffering and building a modern state based on the rule of law,”, Olabi said.
The United States had previously called on the UN Security Council to lift sanctions imposed on al-Sharaa and Khattab.
