Martial law cannot be grounds for restricting rights of Ukrainians: EU Ambassador

In times of war, some restrictions on the fundamental rights of citizens may be necessary, but only if they are temporary, justified and understandable to society. This position was expressed by the EU Ambassador to Ukraine, Katarina Mathernova, in an exclusive commentary for Ukrinform.
‘In general, the EU understands that under martial law, certain restrictions, such as curfews and others, are inevitable,’ she said on the eve of the publication of the annual EU Enlargement Report, where the European Commission will, in particular, assess the human rights situation in Ukraine.
At the same time, the EU expects the authorities to properly explain to citizens the need to restrict their rights and freedoms. Mathernova stressed that martial law cannot be considered a ‘carte blanche’ for restricting rights.
‘But I don’t think you will necessarily see any serious concerns about this in the upcoming report,’ she added.
Earlier, Katarina Maternova noted that the upcoming winter in Ukraine would be harder than the previous one.
In addition, it was reported that the European Commission is preparing a report on the progress of the candidate countries on their way to joining the EU.
