MEPs demand investigation into FIFA president after awarding peace prize to Trump
A group of 50 MEPs have called on FIFA to investigate the actions of its president, Gianni Infantino, after the organization established the Peace Prize and awarded it to US President Donald Trump. The MEPs believe that this situation may indicate a violation of the principle of political neutrality enshrined in FIFA’s rules. This is stated in a letter from the MEPs, which was received by Politico.
The authors of the appeal supported the complaint by the human rights organization FairSquare. It asks FIFA’s ethics committee to evaluate both the creation of the annual FIFA Peace Prize and the decision to award the first award to Trump.
“The World Cup should unite the world. When FIFA President Infantino gives preference to one president over another, it discredits FIFA and the entire tournament,” said Barry Andrews, a Renew MEP who wrote the letter.
The letter stresses that it is now, when FIFA is in the spotlight due to the World Cup, that the organization should consider FairSquare’s complaint.
“This complaint gives FIFA an opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to the principles of political neutrality, transparency and accountability,” the letter says.
Infantino presented Trump with the new FIFA Peace Prize on December 5, 2025. Just three days later, FairSquare filed its first complaint.
Critics claim that the FIFA President did not inform the organization’s Council about this before establishing the award. They perceived the award itself as an obvious gesture in favor of the American president. According to MEPs, Infantino’s public statements in support of Trump may contradict FIFA’s statutes. It states that “FIFA remains neutral in matters of politics and religion.”
FIFA confirmed in December that it had received a complaint, but has not yet responded to the letter from MEPs.
Against this background, another situation related to Trump is also mentioned: the US president wrote a letter to the Prime Minister of Norway, where he linked his statements about his intention to take control of Greenland to the fact that he was not awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
In addition, the White House criticized the Nobel Committee and stated that it “puts politics above peace” because Donald Trump did not receive the Peace Prize.
