Mercedes-Benz recalls over 144,000 cars from the US market due to a technical defect
German automaker Mercedes-Benz has announced a large-scale recall of more than 144,000 vehicles in the US market. As reports the Reuters news agency, the reason for this decision was technical problems with the dashboard, which can suddenly go out while the vehicle is moving.
According to the regulator, the malfunction is directly related to the multimedia system control unit, which is responsible for navigation and entertainment functions. Due to a software error, the system can reboot right while driving, which leads to a complete shutdown of the digital instrument panel in front of the driver.
The company concerns new car models released between 2024 and 2026. The list includes popular series of the brand, including the AMG GT and SL sports models, C-Class and E-Class sedans, as well as coupes and crossovers of the CLE and GLC lines. Mercedes-Benz promised to update the multimedia system software free of charge at official dealerships to eliminate safety risks.
This recall adds to a series of technical problems at major global automakers this year. In particular, Tesla is recalling more than 200,000 cars due to a malfunction of its rearview cameras, and Ford has announced a recall of almost 1.4 million F-150 pickup trucks due to a defect in the automatic transmission. In addition, General Motors has announced a large-scale service campaign, recalling 270,000 vehicles.
Mass service campaigns by market leaders highlight the growing complexity of modern automotive electronics and software. Experts note that software is increasingly becoming the main cause of critical breakdowns in new generations of cars.
