Microsoft is switching to passwordless accounts
Microsoft has announced the introduction of a new approach to creating accounts: from now on, new accounts will be passwordless by default. Users will be offered alternative authorization methods — passkeys, push notifications, or physical security keys. About this informs The Verge.
The company has also updated the login interface, making it more convenient for those who choose to log in without using a password. Owners of existing accounts can continue to use passwords, but can delete them themselves in the settings.
Microsoft notes that about a million access keys are activated every day, and their login efficiency is 98%. In comparison, the rate of successful login using passwords reaches only 32%. The company plans to gradually expand passkey support in its products over the next year.
New accounts will immediately be equipped with passwordless authentication features, and users of such accounts will not see a field to create a password at all. Those who have old accounts can give up their password at any time through the appropriate settings. The corporation decided to change its name to “Password Day” in May, which is celebrated annually around the world.
At the same time, Microsoft is actively integrating generative technologies into the development process, and currently 30% of the corporation’s internal code is created using artificial intelligence. This was officially announced by the company’s general director.
