Microsoft officially ends support for Windows 10 operating system

Microsoft has officially ended support for Windows 10, released in 2015. This is reports The Guardian.

The end of support has been talked about for a long time, and the company has been actively pushing users to upgrade to Windows 11 with full-screen ads offering to buy a new computer.

The popularity of Windows 10 is explained by the fact that millions of devices in the world do not meet the minimum requirements of Windows 11. In addition, many users do not want to update the operating system for various reasons.

According to data StatCounter, in July 2025 Windows 11 overtook Windows 10 in market share for the first time, but already in August Windows 10 regained its position a little. Also, in August and September, the popularity of Windows 7, which is almost 16 years old, unexpectedly increased.

Microsoft took into account that Windows 10 is still widely used, and the position of consumer protection organizations. Therefore, the company will provide users who do not plan to switch to Windows 11 for another year of free security updates. This option is currently only available in the European Economic Area.

Other important updates, including NVIDIA’s Game Ready drivers, will also be released for another year, until October 2026. At the same time, Microsoft will stop releasing updates with new functions for Microsoft 365 (Office) programs already in August next year.

At the same time, the State Special Service of Ukraine published a warning about possible cyber risks for Windows 10 users. The agency advises updating to Windows 11 or purchase paid security updates (Extended Security Updates, ESU), which can even be paid for with Microsoft Rewards points.
