Five Ukrainian cities recognized as among the cheapest in Europe
Kharkiv took the last, 229th place among 229 European cities in the cost of living ranking, becoming the cheapest city on the continent by this indicator. The list also included four more Ukrainian cities, and they all ranked at the bottom of the ranking. This is evidenced by data of the global Numbeo index.
Kyiv was in 224th position, Dnipro – in 225th, Odesa – in 226th, Lviv – in 227th, and Kharkiv – in 229th place. Thus, Ukrainian cities formed a group of the most affordable cities in Europe in terms of daily expenses.
Instead, the most expensive cities were recognized as Swiss cities. Zurich took first place, followed by Geneva, Basel, Lausanne, Lugano and Bern. Reykjavik (Iceland), as well as the Norwegian cities of Oslo, Trondheim and Bergen, also entered the top ten.
The rating is formed by the Numbeo platform, which compares the cost of living in cities around the world, using New York as a baseline with an indicator of 100%. The cost of living index excluding rent reflects the prices of food, transportation, utilities and other daily expenses. For example, if a city has an index of 120, this means that costs there are 20% higher than in New York.
Price indices for food, restaurants, housing rent and local purchasing power are calculated separately. The latter indicator shows how much goods and services a city resident can purchase with an average salary compared to New York.
At the same time, last year Kyiv significantly lost ground in the housing cost ranking, dropping from 100th to 137th place.
