Modi called on Indian citizens to boycott foreign goods

In his address to the nation, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to abandon foreign brands and support domestic production. reports Reuters.

Modi’s speech came after US President Donald Trump imposed a 50 percent tariff on imports from India. In response, the Indian government intensified the campaign for economic self-sufficiency and called for the purchase of locally produced goods.

“Many of the products we use every day are foreign-made, we just don’t know about it. We have to get rid of them, – said Modi in the address.

Supporters of the prime minister have already launched campaigns to boycott popular American brands such as McDonald’s, Pepsi and Apple, which are very popular in India.

Modi emphasized that supporting the domestic manufacturer will not only reduce India’s dependence on imports, but also promote economic growth. He also appealed to shop owners to focus on selling Indian-made products.

In the coming weeks, Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is expected to visit Washington for talks aimed at reducing trade tensions between the two countries.
