More than 1,000 people have died in a landslide in Sudan
More than a thousand people have died as a result of a large-scale landslide that completely destroyed a village in the Marra Mountains of western Sudan. reports Reuters.
The tragedy happened after several days of intense rain. According to local authorities, only one person survived. The statement emphasizes that the village was razed to the ground. The Sudan Liberation Army, which controls the territory in Darfur, appealed to the UN and international humanitarian organizations to help find and evacuate the bodies of dead men, women and children.
Many residents of the region previously fled the war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Force (RSF) in North Darfur. In the mountains of Marra, they tried to find a safe haven, but there is an acute shortage of food and medicine.
Sudan’s two-year civil war has left more than half the population on the brink of starvation and forced millions to flee their homes. The capital of North Darfur, the city of El-Fashir, is under constant shelling.
