Let us remind you that on July 21, the Security Service of Ukraine and the Prosecutor General’s Office announced that they had exposed one of the heads of interregional offices of NABU detectives, Ruslan Magamedrasulov, in conducting business in Russia.
He was charged with suspicion under Art. 111-2 of the Criminal Code (assistance to the aggressor state). According to the investigation, he acted as an intermediary in the sale of batches of technical hemp belonging to his father to the Republic of Dagestan. His father, a citizen of the Russian Federation, Sentyabr Magamedrasulov, also received suspicion and a precautionary measure in the form of arrest.
On July 22, the Verkhovna Rada adopted draft law No. 12414 in the second reading and as a whole, which limited the independence of NABU and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office. This decision was supported by 263 deputies. Western politicians then announced the risks for Ukraine’s European integration, and protests against such a move began in the country.
On July 31, the Verkhovna Rada restored the independence of NABU and SAP, and on the same day the president signed draft law No. 13533 aimed at increasing the efficiency of these bodies.
The management of anti-corruption institutions demanded from the SBU to provide evidence to confirm the suspicion. On August 7, SBU investigators handed over separate materials to the head of NABU, which, according to them, confirm the validity of the suspicions leveled against two NABU employees. Also, the heads of anti-corruption bodies did not rule out that attempts to replace the heads of NABU and SAP could become the next stage of pressure on independent institutions.
