NATO to outline concrete steps for Ukraine’s accession at Ramstein meeting: WP
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi plans to present his “victory plan” at the next meeting of the Contact Group on Defense of Ukraine, known as “Ramstein”. US President Joe Biden will also take part in this meeting, and it is expected that new initiatives to support Ukraine will be discussed during the summit.
As informs The Washington Post, NATO countries are considering the possibility of offering Ukraine concrete steps on the way to future membership in the alliance. Although these proposals may not meet all of Kyiv’s expectations, they will be an important signal of support.
However, Ukrainian officials fear that the upcoming presidential election in the US could jeopardize further security assistance. Zelenskyi and his team are trying to convince Biden to make support for Ukraine part of his political legacy, but the White House is still cautious about making decisions that could affect the Democratic campaign.
Meanwhile, against the background of ongoing hostilities and the difficult situation at the front, public opinion in Ukraine is changing. Although Kyiv has no plans to give up its territories, more and more citizens are willing to make temporary compromises if they secure NATO membership or security guarantees from allies.
Russia has regained the offensive initiative at the front, while Ukraine is intensifying mobilization efforts to replenish troops. Ukraine’s cross-border incursion into Russia’s Kursk region this summer raised morale among Ukrainians and showed allies that Ukraine is still capable of offensive action. However, Ukraine’s offensive operations have stalled, and the country continues to lose ground in the east, including the recent loss of Ugledar.
