Nevada government to receive $10 million from Roblox over allegations of insufficient child protection

Popular gaming platform Roblox has reached a settlement with Nevada authorities after a series of allegations of insufficient protection of underage users. The company agreed to pay $10 million and implement significant changes to its safety rules that will be mandatory across the United States.

Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford said the agreement avoided a trial that would have proven the platform’s lack of basic tools to ensure a safe environment.

Under the agreement, Roblox will spend $10 million to fund children’s programs in Nevada over the next three years. The company will also spend $2.5 million on online safety awareness campaigns and increased cooperation with law enforcement. The new standards include mandatory age verification through official documents and analysis of behavioral algorithms of accounts, as well as restrictions on communication opportunities for users who are not yet 16 years old.

“The agreement with the Nevada authorities will allow the introduction of new security standards that will work throughout the country by the beginning of June,” Roblox representatives noted.

As part of the security policy update, the platform is canceling chat encryption for minors and strengthening parental control functionality. In particular, the gaming service has already begun testing facial recognition technologies for age verification. It was also announced that specialized profile categories will be created: Roblox Kids accounts will be designed for children aged 5 to 8, and Roblox Select will cover an audience of 9 to 15 years old. Both categories impose strict restrictions on available content and communication.

“The platform lacked basic tools to protect children, so these changes are a necessary step to create a safe digital space,” summarized the Nevada Attorney General.

Despite the settlement in Nevada, the company remains the subject of more than 140 lawsuits in US federal courts. Attorneys general in several states, including Texas, Florida, and Iowa, accuse Roblox of knowingly condoning the sexual exploitation of children on the platform. The company’s management categorically rejects these accusations and insists that the innovations implemented are the most progressive in the segment of children’s online entertainment.

The situation around Roblox reflects a global trend towards increased government regulation of the activities of large technology companies. It is expected that new security measures will help reduce risks for millions of young users, but human rights activists continue to insist on conducting independent audits of content moderation algorithms. The platform’s further reputation will depend on the effectiveness of the implemented filters and the company’s ability to respond promptly to potential threats.
