NMT without unnecessary stress: tips for graduates taking the exam in wartime
For Ukrainian graduates, the NMT exam takes place in conditions that are difficult to compare with a regular entrance campaign, because preparation for the test often takes place against the backdrop of air raids, moving, distance learning, loss of a stable regime and constant psychological stress. Children of war approach the exam with different learning experiences and different levels of exhaustion, so on the day of the test, not only knowledge becomes important for them, but also concentration, thoughtful preparation and a sense of control over basic things.
What to bring to the NMT
The director of the Ukrainian Center for Education Quality Assessment Tetyana Vakulenko reminded that the NMT participant must come to the temporary examination center with an identity document. This can be a passport of a citizen of Ukraine, a foreign passport or a digital document in the “Diya” application.
In addition to the document, the applicant must have a certificate of the NMT participant, which appears in the personal account after successful registration. It is also necessary to take an invitation to the test, since it indicates the date, address, building or other location details that help to avoid confusion on the day of the exam.
According to Vakulenko, participants sometimes make a mistake with the date, address or building in which the temporary examination center is located. Such a situation can take time, increase stress and create a problem before the start of the test.
For children who are already taking the exam in difficult war conditions, unnecessary confusion with the route or building can become an additional psychological burden. That is why it is worth carefully re-reading the invitation in the evening, and it is better to think over the route to the testing point in such a way as to leave a margin of time for the journey.
What will help you survive the day of testing
On the day of the NMT, participants are advised to take a pen to work with a draft, although paper will be issued on site. It is also worth having a bottle of water and a small snack that can be eaten during the 20-minute break.
Separately, Vakulenko drew attention to warm clothing, because during an air alarm, participants may be transferred to a shelter, where the temperature is lower than in the classroom. For teenagers who have several hours to work focused on tasks, physical discomfort can quickly turn into fatigue, so thoughtful clothing becomes part of preparing for the exam.
What is prohibited to take with you
You cannot bring technical communication equipment to the NMT, including phones, headphones, flash drives, and other devices that can be used to transmit or store information. Printed materials, notebooks, notebooks and any objects that may pose a danger to people are also prohibited.
Such rules are necessary for uniform testing conditions, so it is better for applicants to check things in advance so as not to find themselves in a situation where an extra item creates a problem even before entering the examination center.
Why the night before the NMT should be without a marathon of study
Tetyana Vakulenko advises participants to get enough sleep before testing and not try to repeat all the topics from four subjects in one night. According to her, such an attempt will not give the desired result, because exhaustion will only worsen concentration on the day of the exam.
For children of war, this advice is of particular importance, since many graduates have already studied for a long time in conditions of disruptions, anxiety, moving or loss of the usual school environment. Before the NMT, the body needs recovery, not additional stress that can prevent them from using the knowledge they have already gained.
Psychological readiness and support from loved ones
Vakulenko advises to calm down in the morning, support yourself and your loved ones, and also remember that the NMT is an important stage of admission, but it does not determine the value of a person. This approach is especially important for teenagers who, due to the war, often grew up faster than they should have, and perceive the exam as another test of endurance.
Support from family, classmates, and friends on the day of the test helps reduce tension, because the participant enters the classroom not with a feeling of isolation, but with the understanding that there are people nearby who will accept any result. In the difficult conditions of the admission campaign, such support can be no less important than correctly collected documents or a timely thought-out route.
