Orban announced the strengthening of security of energy facilities by the military due to the alleged threat from Ukraine
After a meeting of the Defense Council on February 25, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced an alleged threat to the country’s energy system from Ukraine and ordered to strengthen the protection of strategic facilities. According to him, Kyiv is allegedly “planning new actions” against the Hungarian energy system, in addition to stopping the supply of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline, so the authorities will take additional security measures.
“I have ordered to strengthen the protection of energy infrastructure facilities… We will deploy military personnel near energy facilities and the necessary means to prevent attacks. “The police will patrol around designated power plants, distribution stations and dispatch centers,” Orban said.
In addition, he ordered a ban on drone flights in areas bordering Ukraine.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó previously claimed that the Druzhba pipeline was not damaged by the Russian missile strike and that the oil supply was stopped by Ukraine for political reasons, allegedly to influence the results of the Hungarian elections. He also confirmed that Budapest will continue to block the 20th package of EU sanctions against Russia and the allocation of 90 billion euros in European financial assistance to Ukraine.
Szijjártó once again declared about the alleged “anti-Hungarian policy” on the part of Kyiv and even about “hatred” towards Hungary.
Parliamentary elections in Hungary are scheduled for April 2026. According to sociological polls, the opposition party “Tisa” currently has a significant advantage over the ruling party.
