Over 60% of perpetrators of domestic violence are military personnel and veterans: Ihor Klymenko

The Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Ihor Klymenko, reported an alarming trend: since the beginning of 2024, the number of cases of domestic violence in the country has increased by 14%, and 60% of perpetrators are military personnel and persons who have returned from the front.

According to the minister, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other psychological problems experienced by veterans can lead to alcoholism, drug addiction, criminal behavior, or a combination thereof.

Psychological rehabilitation: a challenge for Ukraine

Klymenko emphasized that the system of psychological rehabilitation of the military in Ukraine is only at the initial stage of development. He noted that without training a sufficient number of qualified specialists, the country may face serious problems in the future.

What does a person with PTSD who has some kind of mental change after the war do? She can either be an alcoholic, or a drug addict, or go into a criminal environment, or combine it all together.”Klymenko noted.

The minister also emphasized the need to take into account the specifics of military service and its impact on the psyche.

“Now, one of the main problems we are paying attention to is psychological rehabilitation, which is still in its infancy. If we do not select specialists, do not train them, then we will have big problems“, – he said.
