The State Border Service of Ukraine confirmed the dismissal of the former head of the department, Serhiy Deineka, from military service
Lieutenant General and former head of the State Border Service of Ukraine Serhiy Deinek was dismissed from military service. The order was dated February 2, but the department did not disclose the official reason for the dismissal.
The information about the dismissal was confirmed by the spokesman for the State Border Service of Ukraine, Andriy Demchenko. According to him, the procedure took place in accordance with current legislation, in particular the Law of Ukraine “On Military Duty and Military Service” and the provisions on passing a military medical commission.
“These documents, among other things, determine the state of health. The law prohibits disclosing medical information,” he emphasized.
Demchenko noted that during his service, Serhiy Deineko was injured, in particular, a serious mine-explosive injury.
“During his military service while defending the country, Serhiy Deineko was injured, in particular, a serious mine-explosive injury. The consequences of the injuries required repeated surgical interventions, and also left long-term consequences,” the spokesman specified.
He also emphasized that medical examinations of servicemen of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine are conducted by independent commissions, which independently determine the degree of fitness based on health.
Previously, information appeared that Deineko underwent a military medical commission at a medical institution that was previously under his control. There were also suggestions that the reason for the dismissal could be unfitness for further service, but there is no official confirmation of this. The State Border Service of Ukraine emphasizes that the final decision is made by the Central Executive Committee, and the dismissal procedure is formally correct.
In early January 2026, it became known that Serhiy Deineko was appointed advisor to the Minister of Internal Affairs. In this position, he was to deal with issues of state border security and the development of strategic decisions, relying on many years of managerial experience.
At the same time, at the end of January, the NABU and the SAPO reported the exposure of former and current officials of the State Border Service of Ukraine, who are suspected of systematically receiving illegal benefits for facilitating illegal crossing of the state border. Among the defendants in the case are Serhiy Deineko and the head of one of the checkpoints, Oleksandr Marushchak. The court chose them as a precautionary measure in the form of bail, which was later posted.
Serhiy Deineko has headed the State Border Service of Ukraine since June 2019. At the end of December 2025, it became known about his dismissal from the post of head of the agency.
