Over 76 million hryvnias were paid to Ukrainians who sheltered the displaced

At the end of last week, the Ministry of Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories reported on compensation for Ukrainians who provided housing to internally displaced persons. Payments for February have been received so far. In total, more than 76 million hryvnias were paid out in the second month of the year. They went to the accounts of more than 71,000 homeowners.

How much do those who sheltered immigrants receive?

“As part of the implementation of the “Shelter” project, compensation for February 2024 was financed in the total amount of more than 76 million hryvnias. These funds were transferred to more than 71,000 home owners, who accommodated 180,000 internally displaced persons free of charge,” – reported in Ministry of Reintegration.

As part of the “Shelter” program, homeowners receive compensation in the amount of about 450 hryvnias per month (14.77 hryvnias per day) for housing one internally displaced person.

From the beginning of 2024, the program is financed by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR). The relevant agreement was signed between the agency and the Ministry of Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine.

How many internally displaced persons are there in Ukraine?

Currently, there are about 4.9 million IDPs in Ukraine.

“3.6 million are people who have been displaced (or re-displaced) since the start of a full-scale war. Of these, 2.5 million are displaced and cannot return to their homes. Their housing is either destroyed or in an active combat zone , or on the temporarily occupied territory”, – noted Ministry of Reintegration.

Payments for housing compensation will be received not only by those who sheltered the displaced persons, but also by the IDPs themselves.

During the first year of the full-scale war, more than 2.3 million internally displaced persons received housing assistance, for the payment of which 52.8 billion hryvnias were allocated from the state budget. In 2023, more than 2.5 million IDPs have already received housing assistance, for the payment of which UAH 73.3 billion was allocated from the state budget.

How many Ukrainians moved abroad?

According to the calculations of the Center for Economic Strategy (CES), as of the end of January of this year, 4.9 million Ukrainian citizens were abroad due to the war.

“The largest share of Ukrainian refugees in Europe is in Germany (30%) and Poland (22%). Outside of Europe, the largest countries in terms of the number of Ukrainians accepted since the beginning of the full-scale invasion are the United States (280 thousand people), Great Britain (253.2 thousand) and Canada (210.2 thousand)”, – reported in CES reports.
