People’s deputies propose to erect a monument to George Washington in Kyiv

A group of people’s deputies proposes to erect a monument to the first president of the United States of America in Kyiv. Draft resolution on the construction of a monument to George Washington in the capital published on the website of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine under number 3066.

People’s deputies from the “Servant of the People” faction, Oleksandr Kovalchuk, Maria Mezentseva-Fedorenko, Yevgenia Kravchuk, and Galina Yanchenko, as well as non-faction deputy Mykola Tyshchenko, initiated the draft law.

Halyna Yanchenko noted that now it is important for Ukraine to strengthen relations with the United States of America, and not to destroy them. In her opinion, the installation of the monument could become a symbolic gesture that would emphasize the partnership between the countries. She proposed to place the monument at the place of dismantling of Soviet monuments, in particular the monuments to Mykola Vatutin and Mykola Shchors.

We will remind that George Washington became the first president of the United States of America, holding this position for eight years – from 1789 to 1797. He is considered one of the founding fathers of the United States and a national hero. Washington was also a general and commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, taking an active part in the War for Independence of the North American Colonies.
