Plane carrying tourists crashes in Kenya, 11 dead

A passenger plane carrying foreign tourists crashed in the coastal region of Kenya. 10 passengers and the pilot died. CNN reports.

The incident occurred in Kwale County, when the plane was heading to the Masai Mara National Reserve. According to local authorities, the Cessna Caravan crashed a few minutes after takeoff and caught fire. The plane crashed in a hilly area about 40 kilometers from Diani Airport. The passengers were foreign tourists, their nationalities are currently being determined.

The Kenyan Civil Aviation Authority specified that there were 11 people on board, including the crew. The causes of the tragedy are still being investigated. Mombasa Air Safari, the airline that owned the plane, is cooperating with Kenyan aviation authorities in investigating the circumstances of the crash. Witnesses said they heard a loud explosion, then saw flames and debris from the plane. Among the dead were eight Hungarian tourists (two families, their friend and two children), two German citizens and a pilot from Kenya.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased Hungarians. According to him, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has already contacted the Kenyan authorities, and diplomats are providing assistance to the affected families. Szijjarto said that the Hungarian consul in Kenya is heading to the scene of the tragedy.
