Poland asked NATO to apply Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty due to the invasion of Russian drones
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that the country has turned to NATO with an official request to apply Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty in connection with the invasion of Russian drones into Polish airspace on the night of September 10.
“The shooting down of drones that directly threatened our security is, of course, a success for our armed forces and the armed forces of NATO, but it also changes the political situation. That is why the consultations of the allies that I am talking about took the form of an official request for the application of Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, – said Tusk.
He also thanked the allies for their solidarity and support, but emphasized that “this is not enough”.
“Article 4 is just a prelude to deeper cooperation for the security of our skies and our border, which is NATO’s border. And words alone will never be enough. During the consultations, both under Article 4 and during the political consultations between the capitals, we expect much more support, Tusk stressed.
President of Poland Karol Nawrocki reported, that at 6:30 an emergency meeting of the Bureau of National Security was held, at which the possibility of applying Article 4 of NATO was also considered:
“During this meeting, we discussed the possibility of applying Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty. This discussion also raised the issue of the need to strengthen Poland’s anti-drone defense.
Let us remind you that on the night of September 10, drones of the Russian Federation violated the air border of the Republic of Poland. The Polish authorities announced an operation to neutralize them. As Donald Tusk noted, the military used weapons against enemy targets. He also informed NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte about the targets shot down over Poland. This was the first time when Poland destroyed Russian facilities on its territory.
