Last night, June 30, thousands of people took to the streets of Paris to express their protest against the success of the far-right National Union party in the parliamentary elections in France. After the National Union led by Marine Le Pen won the first round of elections with a result of 34.2%, the capital square of the Republic became a place of mass protests.
Supporters of the New Popular Front, an alliance of left-wing political forces including the Socialists, Communists, Greens and the Invincible France party, expressed their displeasure at the growing influence of the far-right. Some protesters chose a demonstrative act, climbing a monument in the center of the square and waving Palestinian and South African flags, as well as holding placards calling for “against fascism” and “against the far right”.
According to the latest figures from the electoral commissions, the far-right National Union leads with 34.2%, followed by the left-wing New People’s Front bloc with 29.1%, while incumbent French President Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance party comes in third with 21 .5% of voters’ votes.
