Rada Committee appeals to IAEA over threats to nuclear safety from Russian attacks

The Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on energy and housing and communal services addressed an official letter to the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Raphael Mariano Grossi regarding the growing threat to nuclear safety due to massive attacks by the Russian Federation.

As reported press service of the Verkhovna Rada, the Committee expressed its sincere gratitude to the IAEA for its active support of Ukraine in wartime conditions and for its constant efforts aimed at ensuring the country’s nuclear and energy security.

However, given the prolonged and intense shelling of critical infrastructure facilities by Russia, the Committee expressed serious concern about the continued security of Ukrainian nuclear power plants and other facilities of the energy system. In this regard, the letter contains a request to the IAEA to consider the possibility of establishing a permanent presence of the agency’s experts at key facilities of the energy infrastructure of Ukraine.

The Committee notes that the presence of international experts on the ground will contribute to constant monitoring of the situation and ensuring an appropriate level of control over compliance with nuclear and energy security in the context of military operations.

It is also emphasized that such a step will be extremely important for guaranteeing continuous supervision of critical infrastructure objects, which, in turn, will allow minimizing possible risks to the nuclear security of Ukraine and its citizens.
