Rubio expressed “cautious optimism” about negotiations between Russia and the United States
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that there are grounds for “cautiously optimistic” about the ceasefire negotiations in Ukraine. About this informs The Guardian.
Rubio called the talks between US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Vladimir Putin in Moscow “a very positive and productive meeting.”
“We will study the Russian position more closely, and the president will determine what the next steps will be. Suffice it to say, I think there is reason for cautious optimism.” Rubio said.
He stressed that the situation remains difficult and achieving peace will not be easy, but the US believes that several important steps have been taken towards ending the war.
Rubio also emphasized that the decision should take into account not only Russia’s position, but also be acceptable to Ukraine. According to him, further actions will be determined after the return of special envoy Witkoff and relevant discussions, and the final decision will be made by the president.
“Obviously, we’ll see what Russia and others are willing to do. It’s not just Russia, obviously it has to be acceptable to Ukraine. We’ll know more when Special Envoy Witkoff comes back and we have an opportunity to get together and discuss it, and obviously the final decision on next steps will be up to the president.” Rubio added.
