Russia’s strike on Zaporizhzhia led to the highest number of civilian casualties in the last 2 years: UN

The Russian attack on Zaporozhye on January 8 was the deadliest incident for civilians in almost two years. About this stated The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (UNHRM).

According to the MMPLU, the number of victims in Zaporizhzhia became the largest after the attack on a residential building in Dnipro on January 14, 2023, and the deadliest after the shelling of a supermarket in Kostyantynivka on August 9, 2024. Preliminary UN figures indicated 13 dead and 110 wounded as a result of the attack. As of January 10, the number of victims exceeded 120 people.

Specialists of the MMPLU visited the site of the shelling, documented the destruction and interviewed the victims and witnesses. They recorded damage to the industrial facility, buildings, transport and the road outside the enterprise.

As the mission noted, the strike occurred in the afternoon, when employees were leaving the enterprise after their shift. Among the victims were both company employees and passers-by who were on the street or in public transport.

“Glider aerial bombs have become one of the biggest threats to civilians in cities along the front line. They are also one of the main reasons for the 30 percent increase in deaths and injuries in 2024 compared to 2023“, – emphasized the head of the MMPLU, Danielle Bell.
