Russian aggression has damaged thousands of cultural sites in Ukraine: ICRC

As a result of Russia’s full-scale aggression in Ukraine, 2,093 objects of cultural infrastructure were damaged or destroyed. Such information provided Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications.

According to data received from the regional and Kyiv city military administrations, in September 2024, the number of damaged cultural institutions increased by 49 units. Cultural objects in Kharkiv, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk and Sumy regions were the most affected. As of September 25, 2,093 cultural institutions were damaged, of which 361 objects (17.25%) were completely destroyed. These statistics do not take into account damage to cultural heritage sites.

In particular, state cultural institutions lost 37 objects (14% of the total number of state-level institutions), and communal ones lost 2,056 objects (6% of local-level institutions). The most affected are club facilities, which make up 48.2% of the total number of damaged cultural objects.

The main affected objects include:

  • Club facilities — 1007;
  • Libraries — 746;
  • Institutions of art education — 162;
  • Museums and galleries — 120;
  • Theaters, cinemas and philharmonics — 38;
  • Parks, zoos, nature reserves — 16;
  • Circus – 4.

Cultural objects were destroyed in 296 territorial communities (20% of the total number of local communities).

The Ministry also noted that significant areas of Luhansk Oblast and parts of Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, and Kherson Oblasts remain under temporary occupation, which makes it difficult to accurately count destroyed or damaged objects of cultural infrastructure.
