People’s Deputy Nestor Shufrych was extended arrest until December 5
On November 14, the Shevchenkiv District Court of Kyiv continued the detention of Nestor Shufrych, a People’s Deputy of the 9th convocation from the banned party “Opposition Platform – For Life” (OPZH), who is charged with treason. The court kept Shufrych under arrest until December 5. It is reported Public.
The deputy’s lawyers asked to change the preventive measure, referring to the “groundlessness” of the accusations and the long-term detention of their client in the SIZO without a court verdict. The defense also drew attention to the state of health of Shufrych and his father, considering it a reason for easing the preventive measure. The prosecutor’s office emphasized the preservation of risks and insisted on continuing the arrest.
Also on this day, the court considered a preventive measure for Vyacheslav Cherepany, Shufrych’s former assistant, who requested house arrest. However, the prosecutor objected, emphasizing the validity of suspicions and significant risks.
We will remind you that Nestor Shufrych was detained on September 15, 2023 on suspicion of having ties with the former secretary of the National Security Council Volodymyr Sivkovich, who was recruited by the FSB after moving to Moscow. The investigation claims that Shufrych systematically spread pro-Kremlin narratives, trying to undermine the Ukrainian information space. In addition, the SBU reported that Shufrich financed the Russian Guard in the occupied Crimean peninsula, providing security for his real estate.
Shufrych is a well-known political figure who started in the Party of Regions, and later represented OPZZH. In 2019, he headed the parliamentary Committee on Freedom of Speech. Despite the party’s ban, Shufrich continued to lead the committee, which drew considerable criticism from the public and politicians. Only in September 2023, after the arrest and announcement of suspicion of treason, he was removed from this position.
Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk, noted that Shufrych must personally submit a relevant application for the voluntary drafting of a mandate.
