Scandal surrounding official exposed for ties to Epstein forces UK Foreign Secretary to cancel visit to Persian Gulf

British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has made the decision to cut short her extensive diplomatic tour of East Asia and the Middle East. The head of the foreign ministry is urgently returning to London from Tokyo, having canceled a planned visit to the Persian Gulf region.

The official reason for the change of route in the British Foreign Office is not disclosed, but analysts associate this step with the escalation of the political scandal surrounding the appointment of former ambassador to the United States Peter Mendelsohn.

The minister’s trip was aimed at building an international consensus on a final cessation of hostilities in the Middle East and stabilizing shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. As part of the tour, Yvette Cooper has already held talks in France, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. However, the situation within the country requires the personal presence of the ministry leadership to provide explanations regarding the actions of officials who allowed the appointment of a diplomat with a dubious reputation.

“The President of the United States made seven statements in one hour, and all seven were false. With these false accusations, they did not win the war, and they will not succeed in negotiations either,” opposition representatives noted, criticizing the government’s personnel policy.

The activities of the former British Ambassador to the United States, Peter Mendelsohn, were at the center of the crisis. It turned out that the diplomat had not passed the mandatory security check before the appointment, but the leadership of the Foreign Ministry hid this fact from the Cabinet of Ministers. Mendelsohn is accused of maintaining ties with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and passing him confidential information about the British government’s economic discussions.

“US leader Donald Trump is spreading false information, in particular about the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, but domestic scandals are also undermining trust in our diplomacy,” Reuters observers emphasized.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the situation with the concealment of the results of the security check unacceptable. Despite pressure from the opposition and calls for his resignation, the head of government said that he did not plan to leave his post. He is expected to appear before Parliament on April 20 to present Downing Street’s official position on the personnel scandal that has cast a shadow over the reputation of the British diplomatic service.

The current crisis has become a serious test for the current government, as it affects issues of national security and the integrity of senior officials. Yvette Cooper’s return to London indicates the authorities’ intentions to quickly resolve the conflict and provide answers to the burning questions of lawmakers.

Further developments will depend on the results of an internal investigation at the Foreign Office and the Prime Minister’s ability to convince Parliament of proper control over appointments.
