Servicemen of foreign origin will be able to obtain Ukrainian citizenship under a simplified procedure

Foreign citizens and stateless persons who have signed a contract for service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard or the State Special Transport Service may apply for Ukrainian citizenship under a simplified procedure, provided that they have served for less than three years. About this informs press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.
“Foreign military servicemen and stateless persons can obtain the citizenship of Ukraine after serving under a contract for less than 3 years. The basis for this is a submission of outstanding merits to Ukraine or the state’s interest in accepting citizenship.” – says the message.
A submission on this issue is prepared on behalf of the President of Ukraine by one of three bodies: the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Defense or the Ministry of Veterans Affairs. The procedure includes submission of a declaration of renunciation of previous citizenship, as well as mandatory passing of exams on knowledge of the Constitution of Ukraine, history and the state language.
Currently, this norm applies both to those who are currently serving, and to those who previously served but have already completed their contract. In addition, citizens of Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Bosnia, Cuba, North Korea, Nicaragua, Sudan, Syria and Zimbabwe are temporarily allowed to submit documents with expired passports.
