Snow fell in Morocco for the first time in 50 years

Snow fell in Morocco for the first time in half a century, and in some regions its layer reached 35-40 cm. Snowfalls, showers and cold weather are observed in the central, south-eastern and southern provinces of the country. About this informs Maghreb Arabe Press Agency.

According to the National Meteorological Center of Morocco, the abnormal weather was caused by cold air masses that came from Northern Europe.

“We are under the influence of very low pressure with very cold temperatures that can reach 0 or even -1 degrees,” – say meteorologists.

Snow covered large areas in the provinces of Azilal, Beni Mellal, Ifran, Midelt, Taroudant, Tinghir, Ouarzazate and El Hauz, where temperatures in some mountainous areas dropped to -5°C. Tourists and photographers, fascinated by the unusual winter landscape, came to see the snow among the palm groves in the provinces of Taroudant, Tinghir, Ouarzazate and Figuig.

Snow-covered mountain resorts have become especially popular, in particular Uqaimden, located at an altitude of more than 2,600 meters above sea level, an hour’s drive from Marrakech. Thousands of fans of winter sports gathered there – skiing, snowboarding and sledding.
