South Korea introduced the KF-21 Boramae fighter: a new word in the aviation of the future
South Korea has taken an important step in the development of its own defense aircraft – the latest multi-purpose fighter KF-21 Boramae successfully passes the stages of flight tests. The project is implemented by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) with the support of the Ministry of Defense of South Korea and international partners, informs Defence Blog.
The KF-21 was created as a replacement for the aging F-4 and F-5 fighters. It is a 4.5 generation aircraft that combines modern technologies with increased efficiency in the air. Its length is 16.9 meters, wingspan is 11.2 m, height is 4.7 m. The maximum take-off weight is 25,400 kg. The aircraft is equipped with two General Electric F414 turbojet engines, which provide a maximum speed of up to 2,200 km/h (approximately Mach 1.8) and a combat radius of up to 1,000 km.
The KF-21 is armed with up to 10 suspension points under the wings and fuselage for various types of ammunition: air-to-air, air-to-ground missiles, cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles, and aerial bombs with a total weight of up to 7,700 kg.
Among the key technological solutions are an active phased array radar (AESA), an integrated optoelectronic detection system, an advanced electronic warfare system and a digital cockpit with large multifunction displays. The design partially reduces radar visibility, although the weapons are currently not integrated into the internal compartments.
The KF-21 development program is divided into two phases: the first version, Block I, focuses on achieving air superiority, while Block II is to include strike and reconnaissance capabilities, with the potential to further develop into a full-fledged stealth fighter.
The latest tests confirmed flight stability, navigation accuracy, reliability of on-board systems and effective interaction with command posts. The aircraft demonstrates good maneuverability and adaptability in difficult conditions.
Analysts believe that the KF-21 Boramae is capable of becoming a significant player in the world market of combat aircraft, thanks to a good balance between technology and price. If serial production is launched, South Korea will be able to strengthen its position in the field of exporting advanced military equipment.
