Russia blackmails Armenia with high gas prices if it leaves the EAEU
The Kremlin said that Armenia may lose preferential prices for Russian gas in the event of its withdrawal from the Eurasian Economic Union. This was said by Russian Presidential Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the possible consequences of Yerevan’s change in integration course.
According to him, the preferential regime for Russian energy cannot apply to countries that are members of other integration associations, in particular the European Union. In this case, Peskov said, prices become market prices.
“We heard the statement of the Armenian leadership that there is a very, very attractive and more than preferential price for Russian gas, for Russian energy. This is really so… But, of course, such a regime is impossible for participants in other integrations,” Peskov noted.
Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan previously stated that the country has no intention of leaving the EAEU. He also stressed that the issue of Armenia’s exclusion from the organization cannot be considered unilaterally.
The Kremlin’s statement came amid discussions about Yerevan’s foreign policy ahead of the parliamentary elections in Armenia scheduled for June 7, 2026. In the event of a new victory, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan will receive a mandate to continue a policy that involves rapprochement with the EU.
The gas issue remains one of Moscow’s key instruments of influence on Yerevan. At the same time, Armenia publicly denies its intention to leave the EAEU.
