South Korean parliament impeaches president

On Saturday, December 14, the South Korean parliament passed a bill to impeach President Yoon Seok-yeol, who is accused of treason after the introduction of martial law in the country. About this informs Yonhap.

During the vote, 204 deputies voted for impeachment, 85 spoke against it. Three parliamentarians abstained, and eight ballots were declared invalid. This is the second attempt to send Yoon Seok Yeol out of office. The first attempt failed due to a lack of votes.

According to the procedure, the president will be temporarily removed from office. The Constitutional Court must make a final decision within 180 days: either confirm the impeachment and remove him from office, or return him to the exercise of his powers. Prime Minister Han Deok-soo will act as president during the review period.

We will remind that on December 3, South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol announced the introduction of martial law, accusing the opposition of dominating the parliament, sympathizing with North Korea and anti-state activities. This decision caused mass unrest in the country. However, the martial law was canceled after six hours.
