Spain has developed the first European unmanned convoy with AI
The Spanish company Sener Aerospace & Defence has created Europe’s first system for managing military convoys without human intervention. This is reported by Defence Blog.
The development took three years within the COMMANDS consortium, coordinated by Sener, and financed by the European Defence Fund.
The first demonstration of the unmanned convoy was held during an event organized by the Spanish defense contractor GDELS Santa Bárbara Sistemas. The presentation showed how autonomous ground vehicles perform coordinated maneuvers using artificial intelligence and modern navigation systems. One of the key features demonstrated during the event was the “follow me” mode, which allows vehicles to automatically repeat the trajectory of the main vehicle.
The transport platforms use the Naviground system, developed by Sener, which integrates with the Indra combat control system. NATO-standard digital architectures are used for data exchange, which provide situational awareness, coordinated interaction and information transfer between crews and autonomous platforms on the battlefield. Although the technical characteristics of the system have not yet been disclosed, it is known that IVECO trucks were used as part of the convoy during the demonstration.
At the same time, ground robotic complexes are also actively used in Ukraine to perform logistical tasks, in particular the “Logistic Snake”. This drone recently evacuated a wounded soldier almost from the front line, having withstood shelling, a mine explosion and an attack by an FPV drone.
