Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada Fergus called on Ukraine’s allies to wake up: ‘We have been asleep for too long’
In his speech to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada, Greg Fergus, stressed that Ukraine’s allies risk paying a much higher price if they do not provide the country with all the support it needs to defeat the aggressor.
Fergus noted that while Ukrainians face the horrors of war every day, waking up to the sounds of sirens and explosions, their allies are safe, far from the frontline. He stressed that it was time for Western countries to ‘wake up’ and do more to support Ukraine.
“I believe that we, who are behind you, are obviously sleeping too soundly. Maybe it’s time for us to wake up. I don’t want a single soul in any country to wake up to the sound of sirens or bombs, but I think it’s time for most of us to wake up to our conscience so that we never suffer what Ukraine is suffering. So that we don’t suffer from that tomorrow,’ Fergus said.
He also stressed that the world owes Ukraine not only for its struggle and suffering, but also for continuing to resist the aggressor. Fergus warned that inaction today could lead to much greater losses in the future and called on allies to be more active in helping Ukraine win.
“Whose borders are sacred if not those of Ukrainians? Whose children should be in their homes if not Ukrainians? Whose nights should be quiet if not Ukrainians? Who is free if Ukraine is not free? My answer is no one. If Ukraine is not safe and free, no one is,” the Canadian MP concluded.
On 14 October, Greg Fergus arrived in Kyiv to address a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
