Study grants are planned to be introduced in Ukraine: details
The Ministry of Education of Ukraine has confirmed its intentions to implement a grant system for financing higher education. Head of the department Oksen Lisovyi emphasized, that the state will finance the education of only a limited number of students in the specialty that is considered a priority for the country.
The bill providing for such a reform has already passed the first reading in the Verkhovna Rada. According to Lisovoy, 19.5 billion hryvnias allocated for higher education will be distributed between the state order and grants for students.
The size of the grant will depend on the results of the national multi-subject test (NMT) and the chosen specialty. Students who choose professions that are scarce for Ukraine, such as nuclear physics, can count on greater financial support.
“For example, the Ministry of Energy did not order enough nuclear physicists, although we know that it would be good to have more of them. Then a student who goes to nuclear physics will receive a higher coefficient — and his 50 thousand hryvnias will turn into 60 thousand. And if he goes, let’s say for a lawyer, then he will get his 50 thousand” – emphasizes the Minister of Education.
An important feature of the new system is that the grant will be given directly to the student, not the university. This means that the student will be able to change the educational institution without losing financial support.
