The 29th Antarctic expedition returned to Ukraine

Polar men and women of the 29th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition returned to Ukraine on the evening of April 4 after a year of work at the “Akademik Vernadskyi” station. About this reported National Antarctic Science Center (NASC).

“The expedition worked for a year in the Antarctic, at the Akademik Vernadskyi station. A group of scientists conducted research and continuous measurements in three main areas: geophysics, meteorology, biology, and the life support team supported the operation of the entire infrastructure and scientific activities. Now, instead of them, the Antarctic watch was picked up by the jubilee 30th UAE”, – the message says.

Together with the main group of winterers, the participants of the seasonal expedition, who worked at the “Vernadskyi” station for several weeks or months during the Antarctic summer, also returned. During this time, they managed to conduct a number of new studies in the fields of meteorology, oceanography, geophysics, geology and biology.

In particular, scientists for the first time launched argobuoys to study the Southern Ocean within the framework of the European project OCEAN ICE (“Horizon Europe”), for the first time they conducted simultaneous radio sounding of the atmosphere both from the Vernadskyi station and from the board of the Ukrainian scientific vessel “Noosphere”, and also for the first time took samples of glacial meltwater from the continent for analysis for the presence of microplastics.
